Building Control

What we do

Building control is all about making sure construction projects follow rules that keep people safe, healthy, and comfortable. This includes checking things like the strength of the building, fire safety, plumbing, and making sure it’s accessible for everyone. If you want to work in local authority building control, your job would be to inspect buildings, check that everything’s up to standard, and make sure construction meets legal requirements. It’s all about protecting people and making sure buildings are built right.

How does this fit into the development process?

"The building control process involves checking building plans, inspecting construction at different stages, and ensuring everything meets safety, health, and accessibility standards. Inspectors review things like the structure, fire safety, drainage, and energy efficiency to make sure the building is safe and built properly."

A project our team has completed

The Quad Telford’s newest hub for innovation, education, and professional development.

It was developed with collaboration between Telford and Wrekin Council and Harper Adams University in order to help the students of today develop their skills and in order to offer start-up businesses floor space at the heart of Telford. At the end of 2024 it was formally opened by Her Royal Highness, The Princess Royal.

Building Control had significant input into this project from plan checking stages. This involved in-depth consultations with the structural engineers and the fire service because, despite its external appearance it is in fact a technically challenging building due to its atrium which runs the full height of the building. Fire strategies and ventilation strategies had to be developed in order to create a safe and compliant building. Building Control inspected the works on site which included the foundations (piles), ring beams, below ground drainage, steel frame structure, cast in situe concrete floors, fire stopping all the way to completion. Building Control worked closely with the developers in order to deliver this high quality building.
