Vision

Telford & Wrekin Council is committed to investing in the health and well-being of its residents. As part of this commitment, we are proposing a new swimming pool in Dawley, designed to meet growing demand and celebrate the 150th anniversary of Captain Matthew Webb’s historic swim across the English Channel.

This project will enhance leisure services across the borough, providing modern facilities that cater to local needs.

The project

This project is supported by Telford & Wrekin Council Leisure Services.

The new swimming pool is proposed to be located at The Telford Langley School, offering a central and accessible location for residents.

This site will provide

  • Increased access to physical activity.
More people in Dawley and the surrounding areas will be able to enjoy the benefits of swimming, improving health outcomes and addressing local health inequalities.

  • Support for local schools.
The pool will be conveniently located for primary schools, making it easier for children to attend swimming lessons as part of the national curriculum.

  • Boost to local businesses.
By attracting visitors into Dawley, the pool will provide a positive economic impact for local businesses.

  • A response to demand.
According to our Leisure Facilities Strategy, there is a clear need for additional swimming facilities in this area. This pool will address both current and future demand.

As part of the Telford & Wrekin Council’s wider swimming offer, the Dawley pool will be open to the general public and schools, supporting swimmers of all levels and abilities. It will also complement the existing sport and leisure facilities at The Telford Langley School, further enhancing the site as a hub for community activity.

The benefits

Swimming is a key contributor to improved health and well-being. In 2022, Swim England reported that swimming helped prevent more than 78,500 cases of ill health across the country. By providing this new facility, we aim to support the health of our residents, increase opportunities for children to learn to swim, and promote an active lifestyle for all.

Key milestones

Plans for the new pool are in development, with further details to follow as the project progresses.
