Description
To replace the existing steps with a new ramp on the old towpath section by the lock near the town bridge at Newport.
Community involvement
The project was suggested by the Local Ward Members and the Town Council. The cost of the project was donated by Newport Town Council.
Why the project was implemented
The towpath follows the line of the old canal in Newport and is a significant feature of the town as a community asset as well as providing an important strategic walking and cycling route. This section of path had steps that had fallen into disrepair and looked somewhat unsightly. The purpose of the project was to provide a ramp instead of steps thereby providing more suitable access for less-abled users and pushchairs, and to enhance the aesthetics of an attractive part of the town.
How the project was funded
The project was funded by Newport Town Council.
Cost
- £27,000.
When was project completed
- 27 September 2023.
What are the benefits to the community now?
The improved facility provides a far safer and accessible route for all users with a particular emphasis on disabled users and people with pushchairs thereby providing an important link for the entire length of the towpath. The area is enhanced visually with a new wall using antique bricks being provided as well as the new ramp.
