School travel assistance

The Department for Education (DfE) issued new statutory guidance in relation to school travel in January 2024. Telford and Wrekin Council has reviewed and updated its School Travel Assistance policy to reflect the new guidance.

Eligible for travel assistance under old policy?

Extended rights where a child is entitled to free school meals or a parent receives the maximum amount of Working Tax Credit and:

  • Child is between 8 and 11 years old and lives more than 2 miles from their nearest suitable school.
  • Child is between 11 and 16 years old and lives more than 2 miles but less than 6 miles from their nearest suitable school.
  • Child is between 11 and 16 years old and lives more than 2 miles but less than 15 miles from a school parents have chosen on the grounds of their religion or belief and there is no suitable school nearer to their home.
