The Definitive Map is the Council's legal record of public rights of way in the Borough. It provides information regarding the location and status of rights of way, being either footpaths, bridleways, restricted byways, or byways open to all traffic. The information recorded on the Definitive Map provides conclusive evidence of a path’s location and status, but it is a minimum statement of those rights that the public may be entitled to.
The first Definitive Map was published in 1958, with further editions being published in 1960 and 1965. Since the publication of the 1965 Map there have been hundreds of changes to the rights of way network. Additionally, the map topography of many areas within the Borough has changed significantly since that time. The publication of a new Definitive Map has been a priority for the Council, and this was achieved when the first digital version of the Map was published on the 12 March 2021.
