The National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) places a clear obligation on local planning authorities to ‘objectively’ assess the need for new housing in their area. This is particularly significant now that regional strategies have been revoked and provide limited basis for local planning policies relating to overall housing growth.
The Strategic Housing Market Assessment (SHMA) for Telford and Wrekin has been updated following the publication of the NPPF, utilising a range of data sources in line with national planning guidance on the preparation of housing market assessments. The assessment is a key evidence base that will inform the identification of a locally-derived housing target to be set out in the new Telford & Wrekin Local Plan, as well as supporting the preparation of planning policies relating to affordable housing and specialist housing needs.
