Digital Switchover

The UK is on a journey into the digital era, with significant changes on the horizon for both landline telephones and 2G/3G mobile networks.

Openreach are moving from traditional analogue landlines to enhanced digital services. This digital network promises to be more reliable and sustainable, ensuring that the UK's broadband services can meet future demands for decades.

The deadline for the digital switchover in the UK is Sunday 31 January 2027. This is an extension from the original target of December 31, 2025. The extension was made to ensure a more comprehensive and less disruptive migration process.

These changes are set to affect all residents and businesses across the borough, so we want to make sure your telecommunications are in place, and make sure you continue to receive your regular council services without interruption.

Telephone providers (BT, Virgin Media etc.) should contact you to make you aware of any changes to your existing phone service during the digital switchover. However, we’re encouraging everyone to be prepared for what to expect and to reach out to the providers where they feel they need extra support and information.

Along with phone service, you should also consider the impact of the digital switchover on:

  • All your non-voice services connected to PSTN or ISDN lines
  • Alarms eg building or personal
  • EPOS (electronic point of sale) machines
  • Payment lines
  • Door entry systems
  • CCTV
  • Fax machines
  • Building energy management systems (BEMS).

Your provider will be able to provide more information.

The Digital Switchover is managed by Openreach so Telford & Wrekin Council will not be able to help with direct enquiries. For information about the Digital Switchover, please contact your provider, visit the gov.uk website or find out more on Openreach’s main page.
