Guidance for placing a memorial

In order to work within any of the three Telford and Wrekin cemeteries you must have a current licence.

Please note: that this licence must be renewed annually.

Applying for a new licence or renewal of a licence

When applying for a new licence, or renewing an existing licence, we require you to upload the following documents. Without these your application will not be approved.

  • A current Public Liability Insurance certificate.
  • A current Employers' Liability Insurance certificate.
  • Proof of current membership of the National Association of Memorial Masons (NAMM) or The British Register of Accredited Memorial Masons (BRAMM).

If you are not a member of NAMM or BRAMM please provide:

  • a copy of your Business Practices
  • a written statment of your safety policy.

Once your application has been approved you will be licenced to work within any of the three Telford and Wrekin cemeteries. You will be added to our list of Approved Stonemason's  on the Council's website. View the list of permitted stonemasons.

As part of your application you will need to pay the appropriate fee. We no longer accept payment by cash or cheque. During your online application you will be directed to make a payment before submitting this form. Upon making your payment you will be given a 'Payment reference number', which you will need to enter on this form before completing your application.

Please note: You will need a credit/debit card to hand before making your application to pay the applicable fee. If you are applying for a new licence we will contact you to take your payment once we have received your application.

Before any work can begin

You must not start any work on the site or any cemetery managed by Telford & Wrekin Council until you have been notified your application has been approved.

Placing or amending an existing memorial

Before you can place a new memorial or make any changes to an existing memorial you need to provide a sketch design with the dimensions of the proposed memorial, which has to be signed by the Registered Owner of the grave. Your application will not be approved without this signature.

Download the sketch design document. Once this document has been completed, return to this online form to make your application. The sketch document can be uploaded at the end of the form - you can scan the document or take a photo of it and upload the image.

View the headstones and memorials page for details of the maximum dimensions* (including foundations) of a memorial along with the appropriate fee that will be payable as part of your application.

*Your application will not be approved if your proposed memorial exceeds the maximum dimensions listed.

Payments

If you are renewing your licence or applying to place/amend a memorial you will be directed to make a payment online before submitting this form. Upon making your payment you will be given a 'Payment reference number', which you will need to enter on this form before competing your application.
