Telford & Wrekin awarded ELSA quality mark for 2022
Telford & Wrekin Educational Psychology Service is proud to announce that they have once again been awarded the ELSA Quality Mark 2022. This recognises the extra high standard we provide in the planning, delivery and evaluation of ELSA training and supervision.
ELSAs play an important role in the education system in Telford, enabling children and young people to better manage their emotions so that they are ready to learn. The work our ELSAs do is especially vital in this ‘post-Covid’ world, in which we understand more than ever the importance of emotional literacy and wellbeing in enabling us to cope with an uncertain world. Our ELSAs are helping children and young people in Telford & Wrekin to overcome the challenges many of them faced during the pandemic and to move forward with optimism.
The ELSA Quality Mark 2022 reflects the value and high esteem with which we train and supervise our ELSAs. The next round of training will take place in September 2022 – for any schools or settings interested in further developing ELSA, we are running an ELSA Coffee Morning via Teams at 9am on Thurs 12 May 2022. Email Jane.Park@telford.gov.uk for your invite.
Webinar recording available for education and childcare settings on Living with COVID-19
This is an update from the Department for Education
A short webinar is available which gives an overview on the changes that came into effect from Friday 1 April 2022 and what they mean in practice for education and childcare settings. This webinar was jointly hosted by the Department for Education (DfE) and the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA).
Department for Education Incident Support Helpline
This is an update from the Department for Education
The Department for Education Incident Support helpline is available to answer any questions you have about COVID-19, the current situation in Ukraine, as it relates to education and childcare settings and children’s social care, or other national emergency issues.
Updated NQT funding information
This is an update from the Department for Education
The induction for newly qualified teachers during the COVID-19 pandemic guidance previously stated that a one-off payment was available to all state-funded schools with NQTs completing their induction in summer 2021.
This has been changed to all state-funded schools that have, or had, an NQT who completed their induction between the summer term of 2021 and the spring term of 2022. Schools will receive this funding as part of their normal payments from the Education and Skills Funding Agency.
Reminder of the updates made to the education setting status form
This is an update from the Department for Education
As communicated on Thursday 7 April 2022, the Department for Education (DfE) have carried out a review of the continuation of the educational setting status form, taking into consideration the time taken to complete the form, the utility of data collected for DfE, local authorities and settings, and the availability of alternative data sources.
In January, the DfE began a trial of automated collection of attendance data in schools; thank you to the 13,000 schools that have signed up. Once the trial is fully established, they will stop collecting attendance data through the education setting status form and reconsider the frequency of the collection of workforce absence data. In the interim, the educational setting status form remains a valuable data source and they will continue to collect on-site pupil attendance and workforce absence data weekly during the summer term.
In line with the transition to Living with COVID-19, on Thursday 7 April the form was updated to remove questions on pupil absence due to COVID-19, and questions about wraparound childcare.
Questions on the NTP will continue to be asked every 3 to 6 weeks. The form will remain open every day for schools and colleges to report any closures, by exception.
Further guidance on the automated collection of attendance data and how schools can join the trial has been published. Alternatively, you can contact us by email.
Access to free school meals for families with no recourse to public funds (NRPF) and the 2 year old early education entitlement for children
This is an update from the Department for Education
On Thursday 24 March 2022, following a cross-government review, the Department for Education (DfE) confirmed the permanent extension of eligibility for free school meals to children from all families with NRPF, subject to specified income thresholds.
This permanent extension is now in place to ensure children can continue to access healthy, nutritious meals to help them concentrate, learn and achieve in the classroom. The department has published guidance which includes advice on how schools can check and validate eligibility.
Since September 2020, some NRPF households have also been able to access the 2 year old early education entitlement. The department is consulting on whether further NRPF groups should be eligible for this. The consultation is open to all schools and childcare settings and closes at 11.59pm on Friday 20 May 2022.
Increase in scarlet fever and chickenpox outbreaks
There has been an increase in the number of scarlet fever and chickenpox cases generally, but particularly since the beginning of March 2022, across England. These have also included outbreaks linked to nurseries and primary schools. Some of these have been where both infections were co-circulating.
Historical data from the UK estimated that around 65% of children are immune to chickenpox by age 5. However it is expected that as a result of the pandemic and reduced mixing, a larger proportion of children of Reception and Year 1 age remain susceptible to chickenpox infection.
Evidence suggests that chickenpox is the most common risk factor for invasive group A streptococcal (iGAS) disease in children, a complication that can arise where scarlet fever and chickenpox are co-circulating.
The Health Protection Hub are aware of one iGAS death this year in a child who had recently had chickenpox, linked to a nursery outbreak where both pathogens were co-circulating.
Full information and guidance is available to download.
We would stress the importance of notifying outbreaks to the Health Protection Hub promptly: HealthProtectionHub@telford.gov.uk
Guide for schools, colleges and nurseries dealing with diarrhoea and vomiting
A guide has been provided, which is designed to be a single easy-to-use resource for staff in educational settings dealing with an outbreak of diarrhoea and vomiting. Usually these are viral in nature, such as Norovirus, but may be linked to consumption of food or water and require some investigation and control measures to reduce transmission.
Please download the full guidance, which includes a checklist for use when there is an outbreak. Once completed this can be returned to both healthprotectionhub@telford.gov.uk and westmidlands.arc@phe.gov.uk.

People who want to explore a career in childcare can find out more about exciting, local opportunities in the sector next month.
Telford & Wrekin Council’s Early Years and Childcare team is hosting the Childcare Careers & Training event at Southwater One, Telford, on Saturday 14 May 2022 (10.30am-2.30pm).

Early Talk Boost and other CPD opportunities
1.2 million Children in the UK struggle to communicate. The Early Talk Boost language intervention is aimed at reducing the number of children having communication difficulties by narrowing the gap between 3 – 4 year olds with delayed language and their peers.
The Early Talk Boost was developed because 40-50% of children growing up in socially disadvantaged areas of the UK are starting school with delayed language. As the early years offers such an opportunity for rich language experiences, it makes sense to start supporting language development at pre-school and nursery so that children have a good foundation when they start school. The Early Talk Boost intervention has been designed by I CAN communication advisors – specialist teachers and speech and language therapists.
Early Talk Boost supports a range of skills that give children’s language a boost:-
- Attention and listening: foundation skills for speaking and listening.
- Learning and using new words: research shows that children with weaker vocabularies are at risk of difficulties with reading.
- Building sentences: putting words together is a vital skill for having conversations and telling stories.
Each school or setting can access 1 free place and will receive an Early Talk Boost pack worth £500. (Childminders will be able to access the packs via Early Learning and Childcare Partnership Hubs, but need to have attended the training). The training is suitable for Teachers, EYFS leads, Setting leads, Room leaders, SENDCo, Childminders.
Stoke Speaks Out is a tool developed by Speech and Language Therapists as part of a School Readiness plan. A quick and easy tool to assess children’s language skills in the EYFS. The screen can be used with children between the ages of 2 and 5 years 11 months and it identifies delays in understanding and spoken language and aids target setting. Suitable for Teachers, EYFS leads, Setting leads, Room leaders, SENDCo, Childminders.
ICAN Early Talk training will include extend practitioner knowledge of speech, language and communications skills and processes; identifying risk factors that impact on the development of communication skills; understand the practitioner role in supporting speech, language and communication development; how to gather information around difficulties with SLC including when to and where to refer. Suitable for all practitioners working directly with children in EYFS settings/school nurseries including apprentices and students.
Please download all available dates. To book a place please email talkingchildcare@telford.gov.uk.
Pre-exclusion Hotline 07816 372459
The pre-exclusion hotline is working well. It has been used by schools that are considering an exclusion.
A member of the BSAT team has been able to offer immediate intervention by discussing the exclusion in more detail, and offering a preventative solution. This support is available for both the individual child and their school.
One example of this was a school who telephoned the pre-exclusion hotline requesting support.
Contact was requested because a child had got into trouble swearing and telling staff that they were going to kill them. The issue was that this individual had previously been on a fixed term exclusion. The school had noticed that the child had complex needs and had previously utilised alternative provision.
The school felt that the information provided to them by a colleague did not evidence the complex needs and support that was previously provided to the child. As Local Authority (LA) officers, the Behaviour Support Development and Advisory Team (BSATs) were able to check the protocol system to see the extensive support that had previously been provided to the child and they were able to discuss this in more detail with the school.
A visit was planned which allowed the BSAT team to support the child and discuss the reasons for their behaviour using a restorative approach. An offer of a restorative justice session with the child and the teacher involved enabled the exclusion to be prevented. Following this, the school purchased further support sessions from BSAT.
In this instance, the ongoing support has allowed the BSAT team to check in weekly with the child, who has remained in the school and is now doing well. This demonstrates that with the right support at the right time can prevent exclusions.
The Pre-exclusion Hotline number is 07816 372459

Deaf Awareness Week – 2 to 8 May 2022
Did you know that there are over 45,000 deaf children in the UK? Hearing loss can be in one or both ears and can range from mild to profound. There are lots of different types of hearing devices, from conventional hearing aids to cochlear implants/processors to support children with hearing loss to have access to speech and environmental sounds, but hearing devices do not restore normal hearing.
Why not take this opportunity to share the Sensory Inclusion Service’s Top Tips for deaf awareness during an assembly that week.
Deaf awareness Top Tips:
- Make sure you are inclusive – if a deaf child hasn’t heard what you have said, don’t say it doesn’t matter, make sure you take the time to repeat clearly what you said.
- Talk at normal speed with normal lip-patterns.
- Did you know that lots of people with hearing loss rely on lip-reading to support their listening?
- Make sure that when you are talking, the deaf person can see your face clearly and that you are talking clearly.
- Try not to stand in front of a light source, like a window, as this can obscure your face and mean that the deaf person cannot read your facial expressions or lip-read effectively.
- Try not to make unnecessary noise as this can be very distracting for someone who wears hearing aids. Think, are you tapping a pen? Shuffling in your chair? Talking when you shouldn’t be? This can all make it harder for the deaf person to hear.
Suggested Activities for the week:
- Have a bake sale to raise money during the week for the local Shropshire Deaf Children’s Society?
- Find a story book that includes a deaf character for a literacy focus
- Research famous deaf people.
- Try a lip-reading challenge. (There’s some great examples online).
- Note take from an un-subtitled video clip and see if you can lip read.
- Learn to finger spell the alphabet, set a challenge in school to see who can do it the fastest.
- Organise a visit from the Hearing Dogs for the Deaf.
- Design posters for the deaf awareness top tips and display them around school.
If you want more ideas or information, please contact the Sensory Inclusion Service on 01952 385269 or SENDandInclusion@telford.gov.uk.

Autism Lead Professionals training
Gratitude is expressed to everyone who bought into the new drive for the Autism Education Trust training across Telford & Wrekin schools. There was a huge response and there is now an autism lead professional in almost 80% of schools across the borough.
The next step of the programme of professional development is to deliver training to classroom practitioners plus all additional staff. This will consist of two training inputs: The Good Autism Practice (GAP) is for classroom teachers and Making Sense of Autism (MSA) is for all additional school staff.
The Autism Standards document was distributed during the LGAP training last term, and is the document that will help you to evaluate your school. Many attendees completed an action plan at the training, and this should continue to support you in your role. The benefit of engaging in additional training will be to further equip your staff in understanding autism and how to not only adapt the curriculum, but to also adapt learning environments to further include young people and be able to understand the perspective and experiences of the young person. A positive outcome of this training will be an increase in attendance in schools as well as an increase in attainment levels, alongside improved experiences of positive mental health and wellbeing.
Jo Jenks (SENDCo, Coalbrookdale and Ironbridge CE Primary school) wrote: "In order to develop our knowledge and, more importantly, our understanding of Autism, we recently received the Good Autism Practice and Making Sense of Autism training for all the staff in school. This training has enabled us as a school to reflect upon our approaches and strategies when working with autistic children. It has given all staff the knowledge of the key areas of differences, and how these impact learning. Following the training, we have carefully considered our learning environments and have made simple adaptions so that all the children in our school experience a positive education that supports their wellbeing."
To access GAP and/or MSA training, please make direct contact with Michael Lane via email to michael.Lane@Telford.gov.uk. Either an EP or LSAT staff member will then be allocated to you.
The costs of the training packages are:
GAP £300
MSA £100
GAP is a 3 hour session which can be delivered in one whole or via twilight sessions.
MSA is 1 hour and can be delivered via twilight or otherwise depending upon your schedule.
The aim is to accept and commit to all the training by July 2022 so please take the time to assess your training needs before you make contact. If you have questions, please liaise with your link EP and/or your LSAT link. If you have not undergone the initial leadership training with AET and would like to receive the training, you can also make contact using the email address above.
Young people are energised by Crossbar work ready activities
A young duo who were not in education, employment or training (NEET) now have a spring in their step again after completing a week long programme of sports activities.
Harry Roberts and Kumal Murray turned their hand to squash, zoomed down a zip wire and found their golfing groove during the sessions co-ordinated by Telford & Wrekin Council’s FutureFocus service and delivered by the Crossbar Alternative Provision (CAP) team.
The pair also took part in a climbing session and all the activities helped to boost their confidence and encouraged them to try new activities outside their comfort zone. Following the re-engagement activities both have now joined an Employability Traineeship with Crossbar – a part-time Further Education course that lasts between 12 and 16 weeks. The course consists of a Level 2 in Employability or Coaching Sport & Physical Activity Qualification with additional workshops such as personal development, customer service and functional skills in English and Maths.
FutureFocus is a free careers guidance support service which offers specialist help to young people with their career planning and will signpost them to local providers with post 16 offers. The service also helps with course, job and apprenticeship applications, communication skills and much more.
Meanwhile, the Crossbar Group, which has many arms to the company including Education In Sport, Education and Training, The Crossbar Foundation and Crossbar Alternative Provision, offers support to young people aged 4 to 24.
The support isn’t just sport and physical activity but also mentoring and an all round holistic approach as a tool to aid the all-round development of children and young adults.
There is also a focus on developing physical literacy at an early age, through to upper key stages where long term athlete development is introduced to prepare children for a healthy lifestyle in which physical activities become embedded.
The Crossbar Group also offers guidance and support to young adults making the transition into further education and employment through CAP and Crossbar Education and Training “more than sport'.
As well as learning new skills, Harry, 16, and Kamal, 17, were able to meet new people, develop their social skills and felt supported during the week.
Jamie Haynes, Director of the Crossbar Group, said: “It’s refreshing to see Harry and Kamal come such a long way in a short space of time. Giving them both the opportunity to take part in a range of activities and build relationships with the Crossbar team has enabled them to join our traineeship with confidence which is something they wouldn’t have considered before taking part in the re-engagement activities.”
FutureFocus has hosted a series of re-engagement sessions for young people across the borough in conjunction with Crossbar at Southwater One Telford to highlight different opportunities.
Councillor Eileen Callear (Lab), Telford & Wrekin Council’s Cabinet Member for Visitor Economy, Employment and Skills said: “It’s fantastic to see young people trying new activities which are helping to re-engage them and get back into education, training or employment. These re-engagement activities are vital and help young people who have found it difficult over the last couple of years during the pandemic, build their confidence and enable them to take the next steps and enter work, further education or even an apprenticeship. For some young people it’s about boosting their confidence, while for others it’s about breaking down some of the barriers which may be hindering them from entering a work or education environment. Weeks like these can only benefit young people across the borough, teaching them new sports and activities which can make a big difference to their confidence and self-esteem.”

Whole class music programme – booking now open for autumn 2022
The whole class music programme has been successfully providing the opportunity for hundreds of thousands of children across England to learn to play musical instruments as part of music curriculum time delivery. Bookings are now being taken for Telford schools for the next academic year.
The programme which is subsidised by both Arts Council England and the DfE make it the most inclusive way to start all children on a lifelong musical journey with the option to book over a number of weeks either 10 weeks, 30 weeks for KS2 students or 20 weeks for KS1 and is aimed at Year 4, but not limited to them.
Our offer allows schools flexibility over how many weeks they wish to book and what type of instrument they would like their students to learn, subject to availability. Some of our schools combine this with a follow on elective group offer to ensure all children wishing to continue with their music-making can do so.
We have sent out information to the nominated Music Co-ordinator in your school but if you would like additional information and/or booking form forwarded to you then please contact us at telford.music@telford.gov.uk

EYFS Moderation Trialling – Monday 16 May 2022
As a local authority, we have always provided a Moderation Trialling session in the summer term to support Early Years’ practitioners in making accurate EYFSP judgments.
In light of the changes that have come into effect this year in relation to the Early Years Foundation Stage, we want to continue to support this practice and will be running a training and network event on Monday 16 May 2022 - from 1pm to 4pm.
This session will focus on the:
- principles of EYFS profile assessments
- reliable and accurate assessment at the end of the EYFS
- assessing children against the revised Early Learning Goals
- moderation and effective transition
- using exemplification and sharing good practice
The cost of this training will be £100 per school and schools can book up to three places.
To reserve your place, please send a completed CPD booking form via email to cpdschoolimprovement@telford.gov.uk.
Cool Kids – Free online information session
Places are available on a free information session for the Cool Kids programme.
The session aims to provide:
- basic understanding of sensory motor development and why it is important to children in school;
- understanding of developmental stages of lying on the back, tummy, rolling, creeping and crawling;
- understanding of the underlying principles of the Cool Kids programme
- to identify pupils who would benefit;
- information on how to deliver the programme effectively;
- how to incorporate strategies successfully in the classroom.
Up to two places for the next session are available to your school. It is recommended that a class teacher/SENCo attends if they have not already done so, though the session would be valuable to any member of staff.
Places are limited and must be booked in advance. The next available session to book onto is 10 May 2022, 1-3pm.
To book please contact the Occupational Therapy team by telephone on 01743 450800 (option 2). Places will be allocated on a first come first served basis.
The session will be completed online via Microsoft Teams, and a link will be sent out via email once a place has been confirmed.
Mentoring education professionals
Mentoring Education Professionals is an introductory session, which will reflect on the roles of mentor and mentee and on informal and formal mentoring relationships.
You might already be a mentor and/or have been mentored in your professional lives. Such experiences are always going to give you useful insights but you shouldn’t feel that you have to have formal mentoring/mentee experience in order to attend this session.
The session will draw on some small text extracts based on research and thinking in the field of mentoring and coaching. These extracts will be used in order to compare and reflect on a number of possible approaches. A quotation, a model, a theoretical concept – these are the things that will be explored together in the session activity,
The session will take place on Tuesday 17 May 2022, 5.30-7.30pm.
Places are free but need to be pre-booked. To register, please ring 01952 277777 or send an email to enquiries@uctelford.co.uk.
Alternatively, bookings can be made via Eventbrite.

The session will be delivered by Pete Bennett, Senior Lecturer in Post Compulsory Education at the University of Wolverhampton, and will take place on Thursday 16 June 2022, 6-8pm.
Places are free but need to be pre-booked. To register, please ring 01952 277777 or send an email to enquiries@uctelford.co.uk.
