Director update

Dear colleagues

I hope you all had a good half-term, whether working through or lucky enough to have the week off. It was nice to be treated to a good dose of sunshine!

As we head towards summer, and hopefully some warmer weather with it, we have shared some recently revised guidance around looking after children in educational settings during heatwaves.

There are also safeguarding and SEND updates, as well as articles from the Early Years team. A reminder also that the deadline is at the end of the month for school travel assistance applications, please do advise any families you feel may be eligible.

We have also included links to a number of useful newsletters, key date information and of course the usual CPD listing. Colleagues from the University of Wolverhampton also have a couple of upcoming events which some of you may find of interest.

A reminder as we enter the last stretch of the academic year to share your new stories and photos with us. We really do love to celebrate the positive work that goes on in our education settings across the borough. They can be submitted via email to education.noticeboard@telford.gov.uk.

Enjoy the rest of your week.

The DfE has launched the Early Years Foundation Stage Consultation

Launch of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Consultation is now live on Citizen Space

The Department for Education has launched a consultation on the EYFS to offer providers increased flexibility and alleviate known burdens, exploring giving providers more choice over how they operate and making it easier for them to deliver the EYFS. It is their intention that these changes will support settings to deliver the new entitlements announced at the Spring Budget.

They hope to hear from many people and organisations before the deadline on 26 July, so they can gather a broad range of views to help them reach well-informed decisions. The Department for Education and Foundation Years are also planning some engagement events for stakeholders, so please look out for this.

To note, this consultation builds on the measures consulted on in Summer 2022. The changes to 2 year old staff to child ratios and supervision whilst eating are due to come into force in September 2023, subject to parliamentary procedure.

Top tips for young people entering work experience

We have over 3,000 young people in Telford and Shropshire preparing to start their work experience journey over the coming months.

Here are ten top tips to pass on, and help ensure that their work experience is time well spent:

1: Make a good first impression
First impressions really do count. Make sure you turn up on time, are suitably dressed (if in doubt, better to go smarter), and are raring to go. If you show you’re friendly, reliable, and competent from the start, chances are more opportunities will come your way.

2: Get to know people
Greet everyone you meet with a smile and try and introduce yourself to everybody you'll be working with. Don't be afraid to ask people about their roles and how they got to where they are now – they will be flattered!

3: Be organised
While you’ll have guidance during your internship, you can’t expect to be spoon-fed the whole time. Listen carefully to instructions and note down important meetings, dates, and deadlines to help manage your time effectively.

4: Get involved
It might sound obvious, but the more you get stuck in, the more experience you'll gain. Be enthusiastic about any task – big or small – and use your initiative to go above and beyond what's asked of you.

5: Ask questions
There’s no shame in asking for clarification if you're not sure what you're doing – in fact, employers will respect that you have the guts to ask. But be resourceful – think twice about asking a question that could be answered with a quick Google search.

6: Make suggestions
If you think you've got a valuable comment to add, don’t be afraid to speak up. Employers love people with ideas, and your contribution – whether your idea is taken up or not – will be appreciated.

7: Offer to help
When you speak to people, ask about their current projects and emphasise that you’d like to get involved. Showing you're approachable and keen will ensure they think of you when they need an extra pair of hands.

8: Make notes
Jot down any useful information about particular tasks you've worked on and skills you've picked up. That way you’ll have a record of everything you need to take away from your time there – this will be handy for future job applications!

9: Ask for feedback
Try and gather informal feedback from your supervisor as you go along, rather than just waiting for a report at the end – it gives you a chance to improve throughout your time there, and shows that you care that you're doing a good job.

10: Reflect
It’s important to be honest with yourself when reflecting on your placement. If you didn't particularly enjoy it, it doesn’t mean it’s been a massive waste of your time. Even if the only thing you take away from the experience is knowing you don’t want to work in that industry, it’s been useful!

Finally, It important to remember that work experience is more than just something to stick on your CV, it’s a great opportunity to prepare yourself for the world of work as long as you get involved and get stuck in.

National School Sports Week: 19-25 June 2023

National School Sport Week was created by the children's charity, the Youth Sport Trust. It started back in 2008, and has run every year since

The main goal of this event is to highlight how important school sport is for children's mental and physical health. By organising school events such as sports days or tournaments, you're showing children all the great benefits to taking part in sport. School sport should be an important part of every child’s education and development.

The Government has requested that all children are active within school for 30 minutes a day, and then a further 30 minutes of activity outside of school, this will ensure that every child will do the minimum of 60 minutes of activity per day. For disabled young people, the Chief Medical Officers’ recommendation is for a minimum of 20 minutes of physical activity every day, to include some strength and balance activities three times a week.

This year’s National School Sports Week will take place between 19 – 25 June 2023 with a theme of Belonging – a place in sport for every child.

If you want your school/setting to take part in National School Sport Week you can register by clicking on the Youth Support Trust website

Mandatory updated suspension and permanent exclusion guidance

This is an update from the Department for Education.

On Thursday 25 May 2023, we published updated statutory suspension and permanent exclusion guidance, and a separate guide for parents signposting and supporting them to navigate the school behaviour and exclusion process.

Behaviour in schools is a priority for the government. This statutory guidance will support head teachers in using exclusions when required as part of creating calm, safe and supportive classrooms that bring out the best in every pupil.

The updates underpin the School Discipline (Pupil Exclusions and Reviews) (Amendment and Transitional Provision) (England) Regulations 2023 to allow head teachers to cancel exclusions if appropriate; and school governing boards exclusion review and independent review panels to take place remotely, ensuring exclusions are conducted in a lawful, reasonable and fair way.

These legislative changes will come into force in September 2023.

Tutoring guidance and funding allocations for the 2023/24 academic year

This is an update from the Department for Education.

We have published National Tutoring Programme (NTP) guidance for schools and funding allocations for the 2023/24 academic year.

We’ve listened to feedback about the planned decrease in the subsidy and announced before half term that, from September 2023, schools can use the NTP grant to contribute to 50% of tutoring costs.

This is a higher subsidy than we previously communicated and is intended to enable more schools to deliver tutoring. Schools are required to meet the remaining costs using pupil premium or other core school budgets.

We have created the 2023/24 calculator tool to help you plan and track tutoring.

Please register for one of our webinars to find out more:

Tuesday 13 June 2023 at 12:30pm to 1:15pm
Thursday 15 June 2023 at 12:30pm to 1:15pm

Most schools will be invited to do this in July. However, some schools will be invited to do this in June, so that we can ask for feedback and improve the experience of setting up training for early career teachers.

You will receive instructions by email over the coming months, but can find out how to set up training for early career teachers before then.
