Business rates fraud

Throughout the UK many businesses manage to evade paying their business rates either in full or in part.

Telford & Wrekin Council is working hard to secure all the business rates that are due in the borough.

We need your help to identify these evading businesses to recoup lost business rates as well as secure the future continuing payment of these rates.

Examples of business rates fraud include:

  • not declaring a new business premise
  • not declaring that a property is being used for business purposes
  • failure to inform the Council that a business has moved into a property
  • falsely stating that a property is no longer in use when it is
  • falsely claiming a reduction or relief.

If I report fraud, will I remain anonymous?

If you are reporting someone of suspected fraud you do not have to give your name but it may help our investigation if you do, so that we can contact you if we have any questions. However we treat all information we receive in the utmost confidence and we will not pass your details on to the person or company that you are reporting of suspected fraud.

The Data Protection Act prevents us from giving feedback to members of the public about the outcome of individual fraud investigations. However, we promise to look at every case referred to us. If someone is prosecuted for business rates fraud we will send a press release to the local media and these can also be seen on the newsroom section of our website.
